In general the USA, UK, Japan, Canada, and Australia account for 76% of the global golf courses. Though golf is a bit giving up its popularity in the USA, it is moving to the East. These years golf occupies new territories and countries, especially those in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

The golf is becoming more unisex. The influx of women players causes the following statistic data: approximately 25% of all the golfers all over the world are women. The bright example is Annika Sorenstam, who won 89 tournaments worldwide, and is the winner of 10 major championships.
Participation of children in golf is constantly increasing. HSBC predicts that golf “will be both younger and less male” (“Golf’s 2020 vision” 4). The game of professionals attracts young players more frequently. Nowadays, a boom of young people playing golf is experienced in China and India. He deserved a namesake tournament, The Nelson Championship, which is supposed to be the most important event on the PGA calendar.
Due to Nelson’s mentorship Tom Watson became one of the leading golfers in the world in the 1970’s and 1980’s. The next golfer worth to be mentioned is Arnold Palmer, who won seven majors, including four Masters titles.

Bobby Jones should also be mentioned in this list full of glory. This golfer never turned pro and “was insanely successful, bringing home four US Opens and three Open Championships in a seven-year span. He was also a five-time US Amateur champion and even won the British Amateur in 1930. And then, at the age of 28, he gave up competitive golf” (“Top 10 Greatest Golfers” 1). Sam Snead is one of the greatest golfers, who “won the Masters three times, the PGA Championship three times, and took home one US Open title and got 82 PGA victories” (“Top 10 Greatest Golfers” 1). Gary Player is almost a legendary personality and the most successful non-American player in the history of golf.
“Player finished his career with nine major victories, including three Masters titles and three Open Championships. He is also the only non-American to have ever completed the career grand slam, and has racked up 165 victories on six continents over the past six decades. Worth mentioning is Walter Hagen, who became a national hero in the USA, because he was “the first American to ever bring home a British Open Championship, and he would go on to win four Open titles in all. The third place in the top ten goes to Ben Hogan, who is “often thought of as having the most perfect golf swing in the history of the sport and became the greatest striker of a golf ball in this sport” (“Top 10 Greatest Golfers” 1).
The second place in a list is given to the World No. 1 Tiger Woods, the most successful golf-player of all times. He was the youngest to become the Career Grand Slam. Tiger Woods is the only golfer, who has won all four professional major championships in a row, completing the feat in the 2000–2001 seasons. Among his achievements are the following: 77 PGA Tour wins, 39 European Tour wins, 2 Japan Golf Tour wins, 1 Asian Tour win, 1 PGA Tour of Australasia win, 15 other professional wins, and 21 amateur wins.

In October 2009, golf gained a new Olympic status. The International Olympic Committee proclaimed their decision to include golf in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. Such idea is being realized with an intention to popularize and broaden the game throughout the world and to save a business in decline. There are several reasons why I have a passion for golf. Golf has become a great activity for me; I have been golfing since I was ten years old. At first, it was just another type of sport that I used to enjoy during my family trips back to China. However, it was not long before other sport activities stopped fascinating me and I started concentrating on golfing. I would like to start building a solid golf game hoping that one day I will participate in the PGA tour. Like for many other people, playing golf has become an obsession for me.
I have chosen golf because it is a prestigious leisure sport. Having golf experiences is especially good, as many people who participate in business make relationships better during golfing. Golf means a lot to me; it is not just a sport but a form of exercise as I like walking eighteen holes instead of using a cart. Golf also helps me socially as it is a form of socialization. This is because the golf sporting takes place in a friendly and social environment giving me and fellow golfers a chance to associate with each other and discuss life issues. The game also gives golfers a chance to enjoy each other’s company even though they may be competing. Golf helps me in improving concentration. I have learned on how to focus on the shot and concentrate on the fundamentals of the swing.
Playing golf is a reflection of my Chinese culture. The Chinese people are known to have started playing golf as early as in 1000 AD. At the time, the game was called Chuiwan. It involved use of a stick and ball and was especially popular during the Song Dynasty. Although the sport was banned in the 1980s by the government claiming it was too bourgeois, the ban was later lifted. The first golf course named the Chung Shan Hot Springs was opened in the mid-1980. Since then, China has held various international tournaments with more clubs and golf courses emerging. Numerous world class players have emerged, including Liang Wen-Chong and Shanshan Feng among others. According to my Chinese culture, playing Chuiwan ensures that a player enhances his/her confidence, courage, responsibility and even leadership skills. In fact, the Chinese believe that Chuiwan (golf) should be a necessary life skill.
Unfortunately, many people have a belief that golf is for the old and wealthy people. I strongly oppose such an opinion and think that golf can be enjoyed by any person. Actually, golf helps both the young and the old to stay mentally alert. For the old, this game helps to stay active and fit as it is a little risky with less strenuous physical activity. Golfers spend just a couple of minutes of the four hours hitting the golf ball. My grandfather used to say that Chuiwan helps in putting dementia at bay due to mental alertness during playing golf. That is why more old people engage in playing golf as it makes them feel young and improve their sense of wellbeing. Moreover, I have gained a lot of insights from the elderly people whom I play golf with and I believe that I am becoming smarter.
Unfortunately, many of my peers think that golf is a game for the rich. In fact, golf can be played by people of any social class. Golf is one of the most misunderstood games in the world, especially due to the fact that it is associated with the wealthy. Such a misconception has put off many potential golfers from the course. The truth is that modern society has used it as a social stratification to judge others. According to my own experience, I can boldly say that golf is a game open to any interested person who can buy all the required equipment and become a members of a golf club. They are many talented people who can become the finest golfers. They should only realize their talent and keep improving it.
